Well, it’s that time of year again – just as we turn our thoughts to the first of our early summer holidays — BA’s ongoing altercations provide us with a salient reminder of just why we should celebrate what’s on offer closer to home!

Why not exchange long delays, threatening dust clouds and industrial action for a week sampling all that Cornwall has to offer. You could also bag yourself a bargain in the process, giving your loved ones a much-needed last-minute Cornish getaway, and save up to 20% off remaining June holidays, please visit the new ‘late deals’ section of our website.

If the Royal Cornwall Show – 11th, 12th and 13th June — doesn’t float your boat then you may enjoy the Rock Oyster Festival – a 2-day event, 12-noon to midnight on the 19th and 20th of June when Porthilly Farm, Rock, will host its inaugural Rock Oyster Festival. Organised by a team of locals whose passion for the shellfish of the Cornish Coast has convinced them to hold an event which champions the sustainable seafood, the festival organisers extend their invitation ‘to arrive hungry, sample the best, take part in the fun and leave happy and full’. Molluscs not to your liking; never mind, you’ll have an opportunity to sample a range of local produce and to see and hear some good live music!

I can’t think of a better time to visit Cornwall… the climate is mild in June, the gardens are at their best, the roads are still relatively quiet and it is still possible for the only footprints on the sand to be your own!

Did you know that Cornwall is often described as the ‘garden capital of the world’? Cornwall’s magnificent gardens total over 60 gardens and because of the county’s unique and mild coastal climate boast a wealth of rare and beautiful plants and trees – some of the most exciting to be found in the British Isles!

What better way to relieve the stresses and strains of modern life than by taking a short break here in Cornwall and visiting our splendid gardens?

If you would like to throw history and horticulture into the mix then there are many captivating landscapes of the grand estates to visit, many within reach of Rock and its environs, such as:

Lanhydrock House and Garden at Bodmin, one of the most beautiful of National Trust properties, a short journey away;

The Lost Gardens of Heligan at St Austell, with 200 acres to explore, is open all year round;

Trerice at Kestle Mill, Newquay, is easily reached and well worth a visit, with its secluded valley garden and grand Elizabethan manor house.

To celebrate the start of Spring we are offering a four-night break for the price of three nights at the majority of our houses, for short breaks taken before the end of April (excluding the Easter fortnight). Simply quote ‘Cornish Gardens’ at the time of booking to benefit from this offer.

Well Christmas is just about upon us again!

Are you ready? Have you done all your shopping? Decorated your home? Sent all your cards? Wrapped all your presents?

It is a really stressful time of year, isn’t it?

Over the years there has been a growing trend to spend Christmas, or just Christmas Day in a slapup hotel or restaurant in order to escape all the stress of coping with the buildup to Christmas and Christmas itself.

Even better still, a lot of people like to get completely away from it all by having a few days away. They exchange all the stressful side of Christmas for a complete change of scene and just the sheer bliss of being away from it all.

If you have just spent the afternoon jostling your way along the High Street and felt your Christmas cheer ebbing away as the crowds got ever denser, maybe it is something you would like to consider.

Why not take a look at our main site? If you’re quick, we might still have some gorgeous self catering Cornwall vacancies!

Anyway. . .

From all of us here at dbholidays.co.uk, have a very Happy Christmas, and a very Prosperous New Year!!

Happy Christmas!

August Bank Holiday, probably the busiest time in Cornwall’s tourist calendar!

It is traditionally a time when holidaymakers descend upon Cornwall in droves, in search of sun, sea, sand, and a little relaxation. This year, since many families have foregone their overseas holidays, Cornwall could be in for even more visitors than usual.

The weather looks reasonably promising (if we can trust the met). Saturday looks set to be a dry day with some cloud and the sun breaking through from time to time and Monday looks suspiciously like a typical sunny summer’s day. Fingers crossed!

If you are in Cornwall over the bank holiday, there are at least three major events you might like to take part in.

On the 31st August (Bank Holiday Monday), Newlyn celebrates the Cornish fishing Industry with the ‘Newlyn Fish Festival’.

On Sauturday and Sunday, The ‘Falmouth Sound Festival’ takes place. It has all the hall marks of being a great event.

From the 29th August to the 5th of September, will see the 22nd ‘Bude Jazz Festival’ taking place. They have a very full programme, and jazz enthusiasts will definitely not want to miss this fabulous week.

No doubt there will be many other smaller, local festivies taking place – if you can drag yourself away from the beach of course!

If you haven’t found accommodation for the weekend yet, visit our main self catering Cornwall site. We might still have some vacancies left for late availability.

Well, here we are halfway through July slap bang in the middle of the holiday season!

Well, here we are halfway through July, slap bang in the middle of the holiday season!

As predicted earlier in the year, Cornwall is awash with holidaymakers, and the evidence would seem to suggest that they are all having a great time.

The weather has been a bit of a mixed bag unfortunately, but there have been some excellent patches of sunshine and clear blue skies along the way giving everyone plenty of opportunity to get on the beach.

Cornwall has countless indoor attractions to enjoy when the weather is less than perfect and they all add something special to the flavour of the holiday.

Two major attractions that spring to mind are the Tate at St. Ives, overlooking the stunning Porthmeor beach. Since it was built a few years back the St. Ives Tate has proved to be an irrestible draw for many visitors to the region. Many people are even more interested in the innovative building itself rather than the works of art which it houses.

The second major attraction which is a huge draw for visitors to Cornwall, is the Eden Project.

What can you say about the Eden project? It is simply staggering in it’s conception and awesome in it’s implementation. Exploring it’s three domes which represent the climatic conditions of our planet should easily fill most of anybody’s day

With the holiday season rapidly approaching, have you made your holiday arrangements for this summer yet?

Although the Pound has rallied somewhat aginst the Euro and the Dollar, given the current economic climate, many are still finding foreign travel a little pricey, and the boom for outstanding tourist area like the West Country continues unabated.

There have been predicitions of a warm, dry summer this year, and the early indicators are that this might not be far off the mark. We have already enjoyed some great weather this year, and, true we have had some wet, gloomy days, but we are always going to have that.

Having beach days is great, but, variety is the spice of life, and those wet days can still be thoroughly enjoyed exploring some of the great attractions in Cornwall like the Eden Project for example where you can totally defy the prevailing weather conditions by experiencing a heat wave in the Tropical Dome.

Of course there are dozens of other attractions to enjoy, and half the pleasure of being on holiday is to find them and select the one’s that take your fancy.

Also, from the end of June onwards, there are plenty of local festivals and rallies to enjoy. Who can resist the draw of a steam rally for instance, and Cornwall has several of these during the summer months? what a great family day out!

Steam rallies not to your taste? Perhaps you have a literary bent. If so what could be better than the Daphne du Maurier festival, or you could root around John Betjeman’s famous haunts in North Cornwall?

But seriously, if you are planning to come down this way this summer, try to book early to avoid disappointment, and – big hint – why not visit our main site Diana Bullivant Holidays, Self Catering Cornwall to view all the self catering properties we have on offer. You might just find your dream holiday home.

Two of the countries oldest surviving customs are celebrated in Cornwall early in May.

In Padstow the local residents celebrate on the 1st of May with the “Obby Oss” coming out of his stable and processing through the town accompanied by his own special music, and of course, the May Song.

The town is bedecked with bluebells, forget-me-knots, and all the first wild flowers and greenery of Spring.

The followers of the “Obby Oss” go before him in the procession wearing red, blue, or white sashes.

Next weekend (traditionally on May the 8th) Helston will celebrate The Furry Dance, or Flora Dance.

As in Padstow, the town is bedecked with flowers and greenery. As the Dance processes along its route, the men are resplendant in morning dress, top hats and tails, and the ladies are very fetching in all their finery.

The Lily of the Valley is Helston’s symbolic flower and it is traditionally worn by all those taking part in the procession.
